Deprtecated animation packages on Asset Store

Some of the animation sets with included Playmaker controllers were deprecated on Unity Asset Store.

The Playmaker controllers that were included as free add-ons to those animation packs eventually became incompatible with the newest version of Playmaker (2023). The packages were marked as “Deprecated” and are no longer visible on the Asset Store.

All buyers that already purchased those animation sets can still download them using the Package Manager inside the Unity Editor. All the animations are still perfectly usable, but the Playmaker controller requires an older version (1.9.0) of Playmaker to work. The older version of Playmaker is also still available via Package Manager.

I will try to find time to reupload Movement Animset Pro, Sword Animset Pro, and other sets as new asset packs soon. For now, the only place to buy those animations is Unreal Marketplace.

Hellish Quart - a game about historical fencing

We introduce Hellish Quart!

A fighting game about sword dueling, in which the blades really clash using physics, and the characters use motion captured fencing techniques. Play as one of many 17th century warriors and use sabers, rapiers, broadswords and many other blades in single player campaign, arcade, or local multiplayer with friends.

Hellish Quart uses active ragdolls and all damage your blade can do is calculated with realtime physics. Four gamepad buttons represent 4 attack angles. Different button combinations give special attacks and combos. If you are not attacking, your character will automatically try to hold guard against your opponent's attacks. The blades really block each other and that's what's keeping you alive. To win, you must use proper timing, measure, technique, speed and wits - just like when fencing in the real world.

Longsword - Unity controller tutorial with Playmaker

This is a short and easy tutorial for beginners. I assume you already know the absolute basics, like how to move the camera in viewport, or create empty project.

The tutorial shows how to make the character walk, do a combo attack with a longsword and change poses from left to right. In this tutorial I use Longsword Animset Pro animation pack and Playmaker visual scripting plugin instead of coding - this is super easy to learn for anyone, no need to code. But if you are a coder, you will also understand everything and be able to use it with coding.

Longsword Animset Pro - free update 1.1 - Asset Store

An update for all Longsword Animset Pro owners, containing 63 new animations. This update will allow you to build a way cooler fighting system, where the character can be in two poses - with left or right foot forward. This works very well for a weapon like longsword and allows to use actual historical fighting techniques.

Shields in games vs. HEMA

I made an experiment to test how HEMA shield fighting techniques would work in video games, in comparison to simple game shield mechanics.

Long story short: unless we invent a totally new fighting mechanics, a simple “block, attak, uncover completly” shield use in games is the way to go for now.

Things From Charon prototype

My brother and I wanted to make a game some time ago. The scope was too big. This is what we got so far, but it's clear we need a bigger team and funding to do this.

The game is a single-player, top-down adventure/shooter, where you switch between on foot and mech warfare. You fight against Lovecraftian cosmic horrors and the mad Martian general, who brought them back to our Solar System. Good thing it's the future, so maybe you stand a chance with your heavy equipment, advanced weapons and nano-technology..? Be careful. You could be dead wrong, human.

We didn't get to the fighting cosmic horrors part yet, so all we can show now is shooting humans. What you see in this video is a general gameplay style in it's very early stage of development. The graphics, mechanics, camera movement, sounds etc. are all to be heavily modified or replaced, but the general play style is visible at this point. The missing part at this point, that would show the full core gameplay, is in-game cutscenes and voice overed dialogues during gameplay.

Selected for Magic Leap Independent Creator Program

It’s a great pleasure to announce that Kubold’s Dinosaur Kit was selected for the Magic Leap Independent Creator Program.

Dinosaur Kit is an AR app for Magic Leap, that will allow you to assemble life size dinosaur skeletons and learn interesting facts about their anatomy. And of course, the dinosaurs will have realistic animations and will interact with you!

Game template made using FPP Melee Animset

This is a bigger game template, constructed using my FPP Melee Animset and other mocap animations from my and Riko's collection.

It includes melee fighting with many different weapons, which have different damage, range, blocking ability, speed and (not shown here) durability. The player has health and armour stats (just like in classic FPS shooters), but also Mana, which allows to cast different spells, which you can learn from scrolls. Template also includes some interactive obstacles, traps, health and mana potions etc.

There are 4 types of enemies.
